UDMS is a State level Dalit people’s forum initiated by the founders of VICALP in the year 1989. VICALP promoted and developed UDMS as a people led, autonomous, vibrant and dynamic movement for the empowerment, emancipation and development of Dalits in the State and to actively participate in the National level dalit movements. In course of time UDMS has taken up issues concerning Dalits and played the advocacy and lobbying role before the state and central government and other constitutional bodies like the National Human rights commission, SHRC, National Schedule Caste Commission, National Minorities Commission etc. UDMS has lent its active support to the struggle of Dalit Christians’ SC and SEBC reservation and successfully achieved in enrolling the Dalit Christians in to the SEBC list. Despite the continuous struggle of Dalit Christians across the country (where UDMS is also a participant movement), the Government of India is yet to sanction them SC status.
